Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen set the pace in Hockenheim for the McLaren-Mercedes team, on a damp circuit. Hamilton had a big spin during the session but avoided hitting anything. Felipe Massa was third fastest in his Ferrari with Kimi Raikkonen fifth, the two red cars being split by Fernando Alonso's Renault. Nico Rosberg was also on the pace in sixth in his Williams-Toyota, while Sebastian Vettel also looked good throughout in his Toro Rosso, ending up seventh ahead of Nick Heidfeld's BMW and Kazuki Nakajima in the second Williams. The top 10 was completed by Nelson Piquet's Renault. Many drivers had moments in the wet/dry conditions but only Robert Kubica managed to hit a wall, while Sebastien Bourdais's session stopped early with a technical problem.

In the midfield the two Red Bulls battled with the Toyotas and Hondas, while Giancarlo Fisichella did a decent job to put his Force India 15th.
