The Formula 1 cars were back on the streets of Valencia on Friday for the first practice session for the European Grand Prix. The summer break does not seem to have changed that much although Brawn seems to have made some progress. Rubens Barrichello topped the timesheets ahead of the two McLarens of Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton. Jenson Button was fourth fastest ahead of Sebastian Vettel, Adrian Sutil, putting in a surprisingly good performance in the Force India, Kazuki Nakajima's Williams and Mark Webber in his Red Bull. The top 10 was completed by Fernando Alonso's Renault and Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari.

The back half of the grid was headed by Scuderia Toro Rosso's Sebastian Buemi, ahead of BMW driver Robert Kubica, Jaime Alguersuari in the second Toro Rosso, Nico Rosberg's Williams, Nick Heidfeld's BMW, Giancarlo Fisichella's Force India and then Romain Grosjean's Renault. Toyota was in big trouble with Jarno Trulli and tImo Glock 18th and 19th and Ferrari's Luca Badoer bringing up the rear, 3.3secs off the pace of Barrichello.
