Nico Rosberg put his Williams on top of the timesheets on Saturday morning in Shanghai, ahead of Jarno Trulli's Toyota and the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton. The one-hour session produced a few surprises with the Brawn-Mercedes being only fourth and 10th. There was also the unusual sight of Nelson Piquet fifth overall ahead of Felipe Massa's Ferrari, Heikki Kovalainen's McLaren, the Williams of Kazuki Nakajima and the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen.

The two BMW Saubers were 11th and 12th ahead of the Toro Rossos of Sebastiens Buemi and Bourdais, the Red Bulls of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, the two Force Indias, Fernando Alonso's Renault and Timo Glock's Toyota, which had a gearbox problem.

The session was not without incident as Rosberg went off on his first lap out of the pits. He was able to get the car back to the pits and continue.
