Practice 1 Report - Grosjean quickest at washed out Silverstone

The Uk's non-existent summer failed to put in an appearance once again as the first session of free practice for the British Grand Prix was washed out by rain. Romain Grosjean's Lotus topped the times.

Most of the teams elected to do limited running because, while there was an additional set of intermediate rain tyres available which have to be handed back at the end of the day, it was too wet to run on them and teams were reluctant to use up their Saturday/Sunday allocation of extreme wets.

Behind Grosjean's Lotus (1:56.552), Daniel Ricciardo (1:56.827) was second quickest for Toro Rosso, with 2008 Silverstone winner Lewis Hamilton's McLaren third quickest (1:57.174) after just six laps.

The Sauber drivers were most prolific in terms of lappery, with Sergio Perez (1:57.664) finishing the session fourth fastest after 11 laps and team mate Kamui Kobayashi (1:58.483) seventh after 19.

Felipe Massa (1:58.119) ended up fifth fastest as team mate Fernando Alonso, last year's British GP winner, elected to sit out the session. Mark Webber's Red Bull (1:58.119) was sixth, with the Mercedes pairing of Michael Schumacher (1:58.493) and Nico Rosberg (1:58.942) eighth and ninth and Jean Eric Vergne (1:59.076) completing the top 10 with the second Toro Rosso.

There were problems for Force India with Paul Di Resta needing a change of steering column and test driver Jules Bianchi hampered by a brake issue.
