Mark Webber (1:46.603), winner of last year's British GP, topped the first session of free practice at Silverstone, on a wet track with everyone using intermediate Pirellis throughout the session.

Michael Schumacher's Mercedes (1:47.263) was second quickest, from Rubens Barrichello's Williams (1:47.347), the Sauber of Sergio Perez (1:47.422) and Felipe Massa's Ferrari (1:47.562).

Nico Rosberg took the second Mercedes round in 1:47.758, ahead of Fernando Alonso's Ferrari (1:48.161), Lewis Hamilton's Mclaren (1:48.549), Nico Hulkenberg in the Force India (1:48.598) and Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso (1:48.678).

Further down the order, world champion Sebastian Vettel (1:48.794) was 13th quickest, with Jenson Button 15th (1:48.841).

Karun Chandhok had another outing in the Lotus and was close to Jarno Trulli, while Daniel Ricciardo made his F1 debut at HRT in place of Narain Karthikeyan. The promising young Aussie lapped in 1:54.33, 1.2s behind regular driver Tonio Liuzzi.

Kamui Kobayashi's Sauber sustained heavy damage when the Japanese driver lost it on the exit of the final corner.
