Robert Kubica gave everyone a surprise at Silverstone on Friday afternoon when he set the fastest time of the day in his BMW. The Pole was more than 1.2secs ahead of the nearest challenger, indicating that the major runners have still to show their hands fully. Giancarlo Fisichella was second fastest but did only three laps in the session, suggesting that a few more laps would result in a better time. Fisichella was just ahead of Alexander Wurz's Williams.

The overall impression is that the teams were busy doing their homework and that the times should not be taken too seriously. A number of drivers did have offs in the session including both Renaults and both Ferraris. No-one did any serious damage to their cars but it is an indication that the drivers were pushing hard, even if the fuel loads were probably high and the tyres used.

The top 10 at the end of the day were Kubica, Fisichella, Wurz, Anthony Davidson (Honda), Jarno Trulli (Toyota), Massa, Alonso, Michael Schumacher, Mark Webber and Rubens Barrichello.

The action will get a little more serious tomorrow morning when the cars will be in action 90 minutes earlier than normal (at 0930 BST) with qualifying starting at 12.30. This is designed to avoid a clash with the opening matches of the soccer World Cup.
