Kimi Raikkonen signalled his intentions at Spa by setting the fastest time in the first practice session for the Belgian Grand Prix. Raikkonen lapped the track just a fraction faster than the McLaren team test driver Alexander Wurz, the pair ending up four-tenths faster than Giancarlo Fisichella 's Renault. There was then a gap of 1.2secs back to Toyota test driver Ricardo Zonta who finished ahead of Mark Webber (Williams-BMW), Jenson Button (BAR-Honda), Jarno Trulli (Toyota), Michael Schumacher (Ferrari), Ralf Schumacher (Toyota) and Tonio Liuzzi in his Red Bull.

The session was marked by two incidents with Minardi test driver Enrico Tocacello crashing and Antonio Pizzonia blotted his copybook at Williams with an off at the very end of the session.
