Robert Kubica topped the timesheets in the first session in Bahrain, although a number of teams did very little running, a precursor for the Friday morning sessions for the rest of the year, with teams staying in the garages to preserve their engines. Only seven cars completed more than 10 laps in the session and seven cars did less than two laps. Four drivers did not venture out at all.

Kubica was just a fraction faster than Alexandre Wurz in the Williams and there was then a 1.2sec gap back to the fastest of the regular drivers, Kimi Raikkonen, who did just six laps. Michael Schumacher was next up with five laps on the board. The times mean very little at the moment as neither Renault did anything more than a shakedown run and neither BAR race car was seen in action. The two Williams-Cosworths also stayed in the garage.
