Jenson Button (1:40.363) set the fastest time in the opening session of free practice for the penultimate round of the F1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi.

Hoping to underline his runner-up position in the world championship, the Briton got his weekend off to a good start and finished the session just two hundredths quicker than Mark Webber's Red Bull (1:40.389).

Not too many would bet on the situation remaining unchanged as the meeting progresses however, with both men's respective team mates proving devastatingly quick around the Yas Marina circuit on previous visits. Lewis Hamilton (1:40.483) finished the session third quickest, with world champion Sebastian Vettel fourth (1:40.755).

Fernando Alonso (1:40.801) had a spin at Turn 6 an hour into the session, while Ferrari team mate Felipe Massa (1:41.260) had a brief excursion at Turn 1. They ended up fifth and sixth.

Adrian Sutil (1:41.340) was seventh fastest with the first of the Force Indias, ahead of Nico Rosberg (1:42.130) and Paul Di Resta (1:42.151) in the sister car.

Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso (1:42.377) completed the top 10, just ahead of World Series by Renault 3.5 champion Jean Eric Vergne (1:42.633) having his second Friday morning run in the STR06.

Romain Grosjean (1:42.685) replaced Bruno Senna for the first session alongside Vitaly Petrov (1:43.118) at Lotus Renault, while Canadian Rob Wickens made his practice debut with Marussia Virgin and finished up half a second shy of Timo Glock.
