Vettel pressed for new Raikkonen deal

Sebastian Vettel insisted that Ferrari keep Kimi Raikkonen for 2017, according to a British newspaper.

The Italian team had openly contemplated replacing the ageing Finn, with the impressive Force India driver Sergio Perez apparently at the top of the list.

But when asked if he was surprised when Ferrari re-signed Raikkonen, Perez answered: "Actually no. I expected they would keep him.

"Life goes on," the Mexican told Auto Motor und Sport. "I will continue to prove that I'm ready for a top team."

Told that Ferrari appears to have gone for the 'safe' option with the 2007 world champion, Perez did not disagree.

"The top teams sometimes look for other things, like stability or peace in the team. But I'm not a team boss and so it's difficult for me to comment on their choices."

The London newspaper The Times claims that Ferrari's de-facto number 1 driver Sebastian Vettel had a lot to do with his friend Raikkonen being retained.

"Yes, it is a shame none of the youngsters are getting a chance but we know why, don't we?" a source close to Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene reportedly said.

"Sebastian is the reason why."
