It is the second time this year that Schumacher has received a grid penalty for a race incident, the first one being Barcelona, when he hit the back of Bruno Senna's Williams.

Schumacher's faux-pas came on lap 39 in Singapore, straight after the first Safety car period, a heavy impact with the back of Vergne's Toro Rosso taking both cars out of the race and immediately prompting a second Safety car period.

"Even the most experienced driver on the grid can make mistakes," Vergne said. "There's no point getting upset about it, he apologised and that's the end of it."

Schumacher said that he did not anticipate the reduction in deceleration caused by the lower yre grip after the Safety Car period.
