Tony Stewart wins third NASCAR title

Tony Stewart has won his third NASCAR championship today at the final round of the season at Homestead, FL.

Stewart tied his rival Carl Edwards on points, winning the title in a tiebreaker by winning more races during the season (five for Stewart - one for Edwards). The race came down to a dramatic 40 lap shootout with the two drivers, running 1-2 - where whoever won the race would take the championship.

On route to the championship Stewart's team came on strong in the later part of the season, getting into the chase without a win, but then winning five of the ten-race Sprint Cup Chase.

Stewart, a co-owner in the Stewart-Haas racing team, is the first owner-driver to win the title since Alan Kulwicki won it in 1992. Stewart's win ends Jimmie Johnson's streak of five consecutive titles.
