Zanardi triumphs in New York Marathon

Ex F1 driver and twice IndyCar champion Alessandro Zanardi has won the hand bicycle class of the New York Marathon.

Zanardi, who lost both legs in a ChampCar crash at Lausitzring in 2001, took up the sport with the aim of representing Italy in next year's Paralympic Games.

Zanardi did the New York course in 1hr13m58s, beating his closest challenger by just two seconds.

The 97/98 ChampCar king has concentrated on hand cycling after giving up saloon car racing with a specially adapted car at the end of 2009. His New York win follows victories in the Rome and Venice City Marathons.
