Mansell leads the way

The Altech Grand Prix Masters event kicked off in Kyalami on Friday with the first practice sessions for the event with Nigel Mansell setting the pace with a lap of 1m35.0862s. Mansell headed Derek Warwick and Emerson Fittipaldi. The times are not necessariuly indicative of what the drivers will be able to do today as not all of them were running with light fuel loads, preferring to ease themselves back into competition after several years out of racing.

"I last drove competitively in Grand Prix racing in 1993," said Derek Warwick, "but I am very pleased and surprised to be as quick as I am today. When you're a long time out of the car you start asking yourself a lot of questions like, are you going to be brave enough? Is it going to frighten you? But I feel comfortable in the car."
