F1 helps out NASCAR

Former Cosworth chief designer Nick Hayes headed off to NASCAR in July to become the engine research and development director of Richard Childress Racing, which currently runs Dave Blaney, Kevin Harvick and Jeff Burton.

The Childress team won six Winston Cup championships with Dale Earnhardt Sr but has struggled since his death and at the start of the year was seriously lacking in horsepower in comparison to its rivals. It seems that hiring Hayes is now beginning to bear fruit with reports that the team have found another 35 horsepower. This is a huge amount of power in NASCAR where the margins between the teams are very tight indeed.
