Job cuts at Mercedes

Mercedes-Benz is expected to announce shortly that it be cutting 5000 job in Germany, more than 5 per cent of its workforce in the country. The move is designed to create a more flexible labour force in order to make the company more efficient. German workers are amongst the most highly paid in the world but this has made it difficult for companies to run profitably and adapt to the forces of globalisation and ultimately preserve jobs in the country.

Volkswagen has also announced plans to cut back its workforce.
