Williams soups up design team

Williams has taken on a new chief designer in Jorg Zander, a 41-year-old German who cut his teeth in motorsport at Toyota. In recent years Zander has been in charge of mechanics and transmission at BAR. Zander will replace Gavin Fisher, who has been designing for Williams since 1989 and has led the team since the departure of Adrian Newey in 1996.

Zander graduated from Cologne University in 1990 and went to work for Team Toyota Europe, until 1995 when he moved to the Rosberg team in the International Touring Car Championship. In 1998 he went back to Toyota and worked on the sports car programme before becoming the man in charge of suspension design for the Toyota F1 programme in 2000. In 2003 he moved to BAR.

Zander will join the team in September and will work on the development of the FW28, alongside aerodynamic chief Loic Bigois. under the management of Technical Director Sam Michael.
