The GPWC and the FIA

There are whispers in Formula 1 circles that the GPWC organization, which is planning to start its own World Championship in 2008, has gone to the FIA and asked that the federation act as the legislator in the new series. FIA sources have not yet confirmed the news but it makes sense in many respects as the GPWC appears to have realized that the idea of having an independent legislator was never very practical and had the effect of upsetting the FIA and driving it into a situation where it had little choice but to support Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One Management, the GPWC's rival.

This might help to explain the recent speculation that the relationship between the FIA and FOM has become increasingly strained in recent weeks.
