Indianapolis recognised for safety achievements

General Motors has honored the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with its GM Racing Pioneer Award, the first time the award has been presented to anyone outside of the General Motors company. The award recognises some of the many achievements at the speedway, which include the first mandatory use of helmets, flameprooof driving suits, rolls bars, crash data recorders and, most recently, the impact-absorbing barriers. These were developed by Indianapolis in league with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Roadside Safety Facility.
