Ferrari leads testing in Barcelona

SIXTEEN drivers took to the Circuit de Catalunya Tuesday for testing, of who the Ferrari pair of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello were the fastest, and Nick Heidfeld, in the Ferrari powered Sauber C21 was third quickest on the day.

Anthony Davidson and former champion Jacques Villeneuve tested for BAR Tuesday. Davidson was fourth quickest in last years 003 chassis, just ahead of the Williams duo of Antonio Pizzonia and Ralf Schumacher. The BMW powered team tested with four drivers Tuesday, with Marc Gene and Juan-Pablo Montoya, who only practiced pit stops, joining Pizzonia and Ralf.

Jenson Button tested Renault's new R202, and out-paced his teammate Jarno Trulli in last year's machine by two tenths of a second.

Toyota drivers Mika Salo and Alan McNish ran into some problems Tuesday with the new TF102. Salo only completed 18 laps due to a gearbox problem, and McNish was unable to run the morning session because of mechanical problems.

German Formula Renault champion Marcel Lasee tested a Jordan EJ11, the 19 year-old completed 71 laps, and was more than half a second off Jordan rookie Takuma Sato's best time in the new EJ12.

Testing will resume on Wednesday.
