Williams not buying Newcastle United

IT was a quiet weekend for the sports pages of the British national newspapers and so one dreamed up the idea that Frank Williams was going to buy a stake in English premier league soccer club Newcastle United. The club chairman Freddy Shepherd met Williams on Thursday.

Williams owns a handful of shares in the team but the newspaper said that Shepherd would like him to buy more as he wants to take the team off the London Stock Exchange.

Shepherd later denied the suggestions.
