Alonso happy with debut performance at Fiorano

SPANISH teenager Fernando Alonso was happy with his debut performance in a Formula One car as he completed an afternoon in a Minardi at Fiorano on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old took over duties from Argentine driver Gaston Mazzacane, who had been working on aerodynamic settings for the Hungarian Grand Prix, as he posted a quickest lap time of one minute and 2.657 seconds after completing 36 laps.

"I'm very happy with today's test," Alonso said. "I felt very comfortable in the car and this made things easier for me.

"The car is very consistent and has good driveability. Given that this was my first day of testing I just familiarised myself with the car."

Mazzacane posted a quickest lap time of one minute and 2.552 seconds in his 43 laps in the morning as the team made the most of their invite from Ferrari to test at Fiorano.

Ferrari also tested at the track with Italian Luca Badoer continuing the work he began on Monday by performing a race simulation divided into three sectors. Badoer completed a total of 136 laps.

World Championship leader Michael Schumacher joins Badoer on Thursday while Mazzacane completes the final day of Minardi's two-day test in preparation for Hungary.
