Collard signs for Arrows

FRENCHMAN Emmanuel Collard - who has never raced in a Grand Prix but has completed many thousands of miles of testing with a string of different F1 teams - has found a new job for 1998. Having driven for Ligier, Williams, Benetton, Jordan, Tyrrell and Prost, Collard has just signed a deal to be the test and reserve driver for Arrows, supporting Pedro Diniz and Mika Salo. At 26 Collard remains young enough to be starting an F1 career although he has never had the backing to land a drive. He came close to racing for Prost last summer after Olivier Panis's accident but the team decided that Jarno Trulli was a better bet. Collard has done a lot of engine testing in his career - with both Renault and Peugeot - and these skills will be very useful to Arrows as the team works to develop the new Yamaha V10 engine, which has been designed and built by Brian Hart.
