GRAND PRIX RESULTS: GERMAN GP, 1988
July 24, 1988
44 Laps, 6.797 km
After Ferrari's good showing in qualifying at Silverstone the McLaren-Honda domination returned in Germany with Ayrton Senna on pole position by a considerable margin with his team mate Alain Prost second and Gerhard Berger's Ferrari third ahead of his team mate Michele Alboreto. Nelson Piquet (Lotus-Honda) was fifth ahead of Sandro Nannini (Benetton), Ivan Capelli (March), Satoru Nakajima (Lotus), Thierry Boutsen (Benetton) and Mauricio Gugelmin (March).
It was wet for most of Sunday morning but dried just before the race and so there were questions as to which tires would be best. Piquet decided on slicks, everyone else went for wet tires. At the start Senna took the lead and there he stayed for the rest of the afternoon. Prost did not make a very good start but soon worked his way past Nannini and Berger to finish second and Berger was third. Alboreto finished fourth ahead of Capelli and Boutsen.
