GRAND PRIX RESULTS: BRITISH GP, 1988
July 10, 1988
65 Laps, 4.778 km
There was no change in the entry list but in qualifying there was a surprise as there was no McLaren on the front row. Pole position went to Gerhard Berger with his Ferrari team mate Michele Alboreto alongside. The two McLarens were third and fourth: Ayrton Senna ahead of Alain Prost as usual while the two Leyton House Marches were fifth and sixth Mauricio Gugelmin just beating Ivan Capelli. Next was Nelson Piquet in his Lotus-Honda with Sandro Nannini (Benetton), Derek Warwick (Arrows-Megatron) and Satoru Nakajima (Lotus) completing the top 10.
It was raining on race day and at the start Berger took the lead but Senna was quickly ahead of Alboreto. Prost dropped back into the midfield and struggled until lap 24 when he withdrew, declaring that his car was handling too badly to continue.
Senna sat behind Berger in the early laps and on lap 14 moved into the lead while Nigel Mansell (Williams) had the British fans cheering as he tore up the order to finish second ahead of Nannini, Gugelmin (scoring his first points), Piquet and Warwick.
