Tony Settember

A southern Californian of Italian descent, Settember raced Mercedes 300SLs and Chevrolet Corvettes before coming to Europe in the late 1950s and initiating the WRE-Maserati sports car project. He subsequently persuaded compatriot Hugh Powell to bankroll a Formula 1 team, firstly with Emeryson chassis and later in 1963 with their own self-built BRM V8-engined Scirocco. His best Championship result was 11th in the 1962 British Grand Prix with an Emeryson but he took a Scirrocco to a best-ever second place in the non-tile 1963 Austrian Grand Prix on the Zeltweg aerodrome behind Jack Brabham.
