In 1953 Lucas took over the job of team manager for the Gordini team and made his sole F1 Championship appearance in the 1955 Italian Grand Prix. Badly injured in the following year's non-title Moroccan Grand Prix where he crashed a Maserati 250F, Lucas retired from driving. In 1962 he founded the motoring magazine Sport-Auto together with Gerard Crombac and subsequently expanded his publishing empire.
