Kiesa began racing in karts before starting single-seater racing in 1998 in the British Formula Ford Championship. He finished third in the series that year and was third in the Formula Ford Festival. He stayed in the series and in 1999 won the title for Haywood Racing but missed out on victory in the Festival because of a mechanical problem. He moved up to British Formula 3 in 2000 with RC Motorsport and won his first victory at Donington Park later that year against the likes of Antonio Pizzonia, Takuma Sato and Tomas Scheckter.

After a disappointing start to the 2001 season he switched to the German Formula 3 Championship and then in 2002 moved into Formula 3000. He showed himself to be wild but quick and was picked up this year by Den Bla Avis and won the Monaco GP support race after Bjorn Wirdheim made a ridiculous mistake and pulled up to celebrate before he had crossed the line.

Kiesa was drafetd in to replace Justin Wilson at Minardi in the midseason when the Englishman was hired by Jaguar to replace Antonio Pizzonia. Unable to find n F1 drive in 2004, Kiesa made a bid for a Minardi seat in 2005 but lost out at the last minute to Patrick Friesacher.
