Friesacher started out in motocross races at the age of five but at 11 switched to karts and enjoyed a successful international career before a serious accident in 1997 left him with nasty leg injuries. After six weeks in hospital and a further seven in a wheelchair he returned to racing in 1998 driving in the Formula Renault Campus series in France. He won races at Pau and Ledenon and was third overall in the series. He moved to French Formula 3 in 1999 in the B class of the series and finished third before going to Germany in 2000 to race in Formula 3 with Bertram Schafer Racing. He won races at the Sachsenring and at Oschersleben. He finished sixth in the series and decided to move to Formula 3000 in 2001 with the new Red Bull Junior Team. He stayed with the team in 2002 and finished second at Monaco but in 2003 he switched to the Coloni team and won his first race at the Hungaroring and finished fifth in the championship. He moved to Super Nova Racing in 2004 but then switched back to Coloni and won again at the Hungaroring, ending the year fourth the championship. He joined Minardi in 2005 but ran out of money in the midseason and lost his drive to Robert Doornbos.
