This British-born Canadian resident started racing sportscars in 1960 but first made an impact in 1969 driving for the Formula 5000 team part-owned by television actor Dan Blocker - 'Hoss' Cartwright in the mid-1960s television western Bonanza. Cannon won the 1970 US Formula 5000 title in a McLaren M10B. He drove impressively in the European Formula 2 Championship in 1971 and drove a BRM P153 in that year's US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. He continued in Formula 2 in 1972 and was still racing in Formula 5000 in 1976 when he finished second in the Rothmans series.

Cannon died in a light aeroplane crash in the autumn of 1999.
