PEOPLE: GLENN WATERS

Name: Glenn Waters
Nationality: Great Britain

Glenn Waters joined Team Lotus as a mechanic in Formula 2 back in 1973 and moved into the Lotus F1 team in 1974, becoming Mario Andretti's mechanic in 1977. The American won the World Championship in 1978 and after that Waters moved to the Team Lotus development department for a couple of years and disappeared from the F1 scene. In 1981 he established the Intersport Formula 3 team and won three races in 1981 and 1982 with Dave Scott. In 1983 the team tried Formula 2 with Scott but then returned to F3 and rose to prominence in 1987 when a deal was struck with the TOM'S company in Japan to open a European offshoot called TOM'S GB Ltd. This was housed in the old Percival Hodges Formula 1 powerboat team at Hingham, just down the road from the Lotus base. The team landed backing from Cellnet and Ricoh Copiers and ran Damon Hill and Martin Donnelly - both of whom would go on to careers in Formula 1 racing. The team enjoyed several wins and there was further success the following year (again with Hill and Donnelly). The team then turned its attention to sportscar racing and scored one win in the Sportscar World Championship at Monza in 1992. Waters split with TOM'S GB and returned to F3 in 1993 and remained inmvolved in the series throuhgout the 1990s although Waters spent a lot of time building a composite Berkut aeroplane for his own personal use.
