Tim Preston

After an apprenticeship with Hunt Engineering, a precision-engineering firm which specialized in radar, sonar and industrial inspection equipment and two years working with another firm, Preston joined Williams in 1989 to work in the drawing office under Adrian Newey. In 1995, however, he was appointed to be Damon Hill's race engineer, a relationship which was rather disappointing in the first season but resulted in World Championship success in 1996.

After Hill left Williams to join Arrows, Preston stayed on and began working with Heinz-Harald Frentzen but at the end of the year he wanted to stop traveling for a while and took up the job of being head of the Sauber test team. This offered him a little more time to himself and the possibility of plenty of skiing - Preston's passion aside from motor racing.

In the end the job expanded to include race engineer and working in the drawing office and in the middle of 1999 Preston quit the team and returned to Williams. He remained at Grove until the summer of 2004 when he decided to look for pastures new.
