Miller dropped out of university to become a mechanic with the fledgling Dave Price Racing in 1978. After a couple of years he joined RAM Automotive which was running old Williams chassis in the Aurora British F1 series. In 1981 RAM did a deal with March and found backing from Guinness and Rizla to run Derek Daly and Eliseo Salazar in the Formula 1 World Championship. The following season RAM convinced Rothmans to enter F1 and signed up Jochen Mass and Raul Boesel. It was not a success and later that year Miller decided to go back to Dave Price Racing where he took control of the French Formula 3 program, running Pierre Petit to the title in 1982 and Francois Hesnault to the runner-up slot the following year. The team went on to run Paul Belmondo and even pop star Andrew Ridgeley (George Michael's partner in the teen band Wham!). Miller was also involved in running Johnny Dumfries during his successful 1984 campaigns in British and European F3 with DPR.
