Race Notes - Hamilton wins in Austin

Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes GP won the United States GP in Austin Texas, after passing his team mate polesitter Nico Rosberg midrace, and finishing 4.3 seconds behind. Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull-Renault was in third, 25.5s behind the winner.

Hamilton now leads the driver championship by 24 points over his teammate.

A sunny day in Austin with air tempeture at 22 degrees. Sebastian Vettel to start from the grid.

Rosberg on pole, his team mate Hamilton next to him on row one, Bottas and Massa on row two, Ricciardo and Alonso on row three.

Hulkenberg, Vettel and Kvyat on medium compound tyres, the rest of the field starting on soft tyres.

The cars come around on the formation and to the grid. The lights come on and the race begins.

Rosberfg takes the lead with Hamilton following, Massa gets past Bottas with Alonso, Magnussen Ricciardo, Raikkonen, Sutil, Perez, Maldonado, Hulkenberg.

Perez hits the back of Raikkonen, who then touches Adrian Sutil. Sutil is out on the spot. The safety car comes out and many drivers pit.

On lap 5 the race restarts and Rosberg is out in front with Hamilton behind, the two Williams are side-by-side, Massa stays ahead of Bottas, Ricciardo challenges Alonso and gets past the Ferrari. Raikkonen, Maldonado, Vergne and Grosjean complete the top ten.

On lap 6 Rosberg sets fastest lap at 1m44.090s, runs 1.1 seconds ahead of Hamilton.

Vettel is up to 15th after starting from the pitlane.

On lap 7 Hamilton is told be the team that he is safe of fuel. Hamilton setsfast lap at 1m43.589s and closes to 0.6 behind Rosberg.

On lap 8 Rosberg sets fast lap at 1m43.270s.

At lap 10 Rosberg leads Hamilton by 1.0 seconds, followed by Massa (4.1s), Bottas (1.2s), Ricciardo (1.9s), Alonso (6.1s), Raikkonen (2.2s), Maldonado (2.1s), Vergne (1.8s) and Grosjean (0.7s) in tenth place.

On lap 11 Grosjean attempts a pass of Vergne for ninth, but doesn‘t pull it off. Maldonado, Gutierrez and Vergne are handed five-second stop/go penalties for speeding behind the safety car.

On lap 14 Rosberg complains that his left front tyre is in bad shape.

On lap 15 Massa and Ricciardo both pit. Ricciardo switches to mediums while Massa takes more soft tyres.

On lap 16 Rosberg and Bottas pit, along with Maldonado and Vergne. Ricciardo gets ahead of Bottas as he leaves the pits.

On lap 17 Hamilton, Alonso and Grosjean all pit. Hamilton switches to medium tyres.

Rosberg leads Hamilton by 2.4s.

On lap 18 Alonso passes Vettel for ninth. Raikkonen pits. Hulkenberg pulls off the track on the back straight with a problem sidelining his Force India.

On lap 19 Grosjean passe Gutierrez for 12th and Vergne follows he through for 13th.

At lap 20 Rosberg leads Hamilton by 1.4s followed by Massa (8.5s), Ricciardo (10.6s), Bottas (13.1s), Kvyat (23.1ss), Magnussen (24.8s), Button (29.3s), and Alonso (29.7s).

Vettel complains that his car is getting slower and slower.

On lap 21 Alonso and Button battle over eighth place, Button taking the position.

On lap 22 Hamilton has now closed to DRS range on Rosberg, following him 0.7 seconds behind the leader.

On lap 24 Alonso passes Button for seventh. At the turn 12 hairpin Hamilton passes Rosberg in the braking zone and takes over the lead from his team mate.

On lap 25 Hamilton pulls out a 1.3s lead.

On lap 26 Grosjean passes Vettel at turn 1 for ninth place. Verne follows his through for tenth place.

Raikkonen passes Vettel as well.

On lap 27 Alonso passes Magnussen for sixth at the first corner.

On lap 28 Magnussen pits from seventh and takes another set of medium tyres.

On lap 29 Button pits Grosjean and Vergne both pit as well.

At lap 30 - just past half-distance - Hamilton leads Rosberg by 2.0s, followed by Massa (7.0s), Ricciardo (9.4s), Bottas (14.5s), Alonso (42.1s), Maldonado (50.6s), Raikkonen (52.9s), Kvyat (55.9s) and Magnussen (63.1s) in tenth place.

On lap 31 Bottas pits from fifth place for medium tyres.

On lap 32 Ricciardo pits and takes another set of medium tyres, coming out ahead of Bottas.

On lap 33 Massa pits from third place switching to medium tyres. Ricciardo passes the Brazilian as he rejoins.

On lap 34 the leader Hamilton pits for another set of medium tyres. Rosberg is told to push.

Ricciardo sets fast lap at 1m42.831s.

On lap 35 Rosberg pits as well switching to medium tyres. Hamilton retakes the lead by 3.6 seconds.

On lap 36 Maldonado pits. Button asks the team if he has damage on the rear of the car, and the team says everything looks good.

Rosberg sets fast lap at 1m42.381s running a second quicker than Hamilton that lap and closes to 2.7 seconds behind. Mercedes tells Rosberg that his tyre wear is good.

At lap 40 Hamilton leads Rosberg by 2.5 seconds, followed by Ricciardo (11.1s), Massa (13.8s), Bottas (21.5s), Alonso (37.6s), Raikkonen (52.7s), Kvyat (56.0s), Magnussen (59.1s) and Vettel (59.7s).

On lap 40 Maldonado pits and takes his second five-second penalty.

On lap 41 Vettel and Magnussen battle over ninth place.

On lap 42 Hamilton sets another fast lap at 1m42.127s.

Button passes Grosjean for tenth place at turn 1.

On lap 43 Vettel passes Magnussen at the final corner for seventh. Raikkonen pits.

On lap 44 Alonso pits from sixth and switches to soft tyres. Alonso comes out just behind Vettel.

On lap 46 Alonso passes Vettel in the DRS zone to take sixth place.

Hamilton continues to lead Rosberg by 2.4 seconds.

Ob lap 48 Button continues to complain about his McLaren.

Alonso sets fastest lap at 1m41.474s.

On lap 49 Vettel pits. Raikkonen passes Kvyat for 13th place at the final corner. Kvyat fights back and retakes the position.

At lap 50 Hamilton leads Rosberg by 2.3s followed by Ricciardo (21.8s), Massa (23.4s), Bottas (28.8s), Alonso (78.6s), Magnussen (85.6s), Button (89.6s), Vergne (90.8s) and Maldonado (91.5s).

On lap 51 Vernge and Grosjean make minor contact as Vernge as he takes ninth place. Kvyat goes off-track at turn 19 as Raikkonen takes 12th.

Massa is closing on Ricciardo in third.

On lap 53 Vettel passes Raikkonen for 12th. Vergne passes Button for eighth place. Maldonado closes.

On lap 54 Maldonado passes Button for ninth. Vettel follows him through past Vettel as well.

On lap 55 Vettel passes Maldonado for ninth.

Hamilton wins ahead of Rosberg and Ricciardo.

Maldonado passes Vergne on the final lap for ninth, his first points this year.
