Michael Schumacher won the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis today in his Ferrari amid a controversy when all the Michelin runners pulled out of the race after the French manufacturer told the teams that it could not guarantee the safety of the tyres.

Second was his Ferrari team mate Rubens Barrichello, while third place went to the Jordan-Toyota of Tiago Monteiro, the first ever podium for a Portuguese driver.

Narain Karthikeyan in the second Jordan finished fourth, and the two Minardi-Cosworth's of Christijan Albers and Patrick Friesacher finished fifth and sixth.

During the early laps a few fans showed the dissatisfaction by throwing plastic bottles and cans on the track, and on lap 3 Barrichello ran over a water bottle.

Throughout the race the crowds in the grandstands thinned.

Schumacher lost the lead in his first pitstop, but regained the lead on the second stop beating Barrichello into the first corner - the Brazilian locking up and going across the grass.

The final laps were a procession, with the two Ferraris lapping the rest of the field.
