Race Notes - Hamilton leads McLaren 1-2 as Red Bulls tangle in Turkey

Lewis Hamilton won the Turkish Grand Prix, in Istanbul, leading a McLaren 1-2 finish with Jenson Button second 2.6 seconds behind - after an incident between the Red Bull team mates when Sebastian Vettel tried to pass leader Mark Webber on lap 41 and the two collided, taking out Vettel with Webber finishing third, a distant 24.2 seconds behind.

The win is the first for Hamilton this season and is his 12th career victory. McLaren now jumps to the lead in the constructors' championship by one point over Red Bull-Renault. Webber maintains his lead in the drivers championship with 93 points over Button with 88 points, Hamilton 84, Alonso 79 and Vettel with 78 points.

Further back Michael Schumacher lead the next pack of runners to finish fourth (31.1s) in the Mercedes GP, followed by his team mate Nico Rosberg (32.2s) in fifth, Robert Kubica (32.8s) in the Renault in sixth, Felipe Massa (36.6s) in the Ferrari in seventh, followed by his team mate Fernando Alonso (46.5s) in eighth, Adrian Sutil (49.0s) in the Force India-Mercedes in ninth, and Kamui Kobayashi (65.6s) in the Sauber-Ferrari in the final points paying position - the first points of the season for the Swiss team.

Webber took the lead from pole position at the start, while behind him Vettel briefly took second, but Hamilton retook the position at turn 3. Button fell behind Michael Schumacher at the start, but drafted on the back straight to pass the German around the outside into turn 12 to take fourth.

The top four runners made a break from the rest of the field, with Hamilton close behind Webber, but never quite able to make a passing move. It looked as if the one pitstop to change from soft to harder tyres would be decisive.

Vettel pitted from third place on lap 14, and on the next lap both Webber and Hamilton pitted at the same time. Hamilton's crew had a difficult time with the right rear tyre, and the British driver lost a slight amount of time to Webber - but it was also enough for Vettel to slip ahead into second place.

After the stop the top four settled into formation - covered by 2-3 seconds - with much of the speculation centering on an approaching rain shower on the horizon.

The order remained the same until lap 41 when Vettel edged close to his team mate and then got a run out of turn 11 and drew alongside Webber. Vettel had the inside line down the straight and Webber gave him very little room. As they approached the braking area, the two made high-speed contact with Vettel spinning and both ending up in the run-off area - the two McLaren's inheriting the lead.

Vettel's Red Bull had rear end damage and he was out on the spot, while Webber's car had front wing damage and - as he had such a large gap back to Schumacher behind him - was able to continue in third place, making a stop for tyres and a new wing without losing the position.

As a light drizzle started, the McLaren team mate battled for the lead themselves, and with nine laps to go Button got a run on Hamilton into turn 12. Hamilton held the inside line but the two ran side-by-side, and Button had the line into turn 13 and took the lead.

It didn't last long though as Hamilton made a run on the front straight and retook the lead into turn 1. After that McLaren were on the radio to their drivers urging them that their fuel consumption was tight and that they should conserve fuel.

The two McLaren drivers crossed the line 1-2, the second sweep of the season for the team - while an unhappy camp at Red Bull was left to deal with two disgruntled drivers.
