Race Notes - Massa wins Spanish Grand Prix

Felipe Massa won the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona today in his Ferrari, ahead of Lewis Hamilton in second in his McLaren-Mercedes and his team mate Fernando Alonso in third.

The win is the Brazilian's second in a row, while rookie Hamilton scored his fourth consecutive podium finish and becoming the youngest driver ever to lead the Drivers World Championship.

Robert Kubica in the BMW was fourth, David Coulthard in the Red Bull was fifth, Nico Rosberg in the Williams-Toyota was sixth, Heikki Kovalainen in the Renault was seventh, while Takuma Sato in the Super Aguri-Honda finished in the final points paying position and scoring the first point for the team.

As the field came to the start Jarno Trulli stalled on the grid, sending him from sixth to the pitlane, and forcing the field to make a second formation lap.

At the start Alonso drew alongside Massa down the straight, the two touching in the first corner which forced Alonso to run wide, while further back on the first lap Wurz and Schumacher made contact, both going to the pits, and Wurz retiring.

At the end of the first lap Massa led Hamilton, Raikkonen and Alonso.

On lap 7 Mark Webber and then Jarno Trulli on the next lap both retired to the pits while Massa sped out into the lead with a number of fast laps.

On lap 9 Kimi Raikkonen slowed with an electronic problem and crawled to the pits and retired from third place, while Scott Speed, who went from 22nd to 14th at the start, had a tyre failure on the main straight and pulled off the circuit.

At lap 15 the order was Massa leading by nine seconds over Hamilton, Alonso, Kubica, Heidfeld, Coulthard, Kovalainen, Rosberg, Barrichello and Button in tenth.

On lap 19 Barrichello was the first to pit from ninth place, along with by leader Massa, Alonso and Kovalainen, Massa's car briefly catching on fire while leaving the pits but fortunately going out.

On lap 20, Coulthard pitted, while Liuzzi limped to the pits and retired with a gearbox problem, Kubica, Button and Fisichella on lap 21, and leader Hamilton on lap 22 handing the lead to Heidfeld, while Button had to come in again for a front wing, after touching his teammate while rejoining the previous lap. Rosberg pitting on lap 23.

On lap 24 Heidfeld pitted from the lead and left the pits before the stop was completed without a front wheelnut, Heidfeld limping back to the pits for another stop, rejoining in 15th.

At lap 26 Massa lead by 10 seconds ahead of Hamilton, Alonso, Kubica, Coulthard, Kovalainen, Rosberg, Davidson (having yet to stop), Barrichello and Fisichella in tenth.

On lap 27 Davidson was the final runner to make a first stop, along with Schumacher making his second.

On lap 30 Kovalainen made his second stop from sixth place, while Christijan Albers served a drive-through penalty on lap 33.

At lap 40 the order was Massa leading Hamilton by 18 seconds, followed by Alonso in third, 14 seconds further back, closely followed by Kubica, Coulthard, Rosberg, Kovalainen, Barrichello, Sato and Fisichella in tenth.

On lap 41 Fisichella pitted, leader Massa, Coulthard, Kovalainen and Barrichello on lap 42, Hamilton taking over the lead, Rosberg on lap 43, Schumacher on lap 45 to retire, Sato from seventh on lap 45, and Hamilton from the lead and Kubica on lap 47, while Heidfeld retired with a gearbox problem.

On lap 48 Alonso was the final frontrunner to pit, rejoining in third place.

At lap 50 the order was Massa leading Hamilton by 11 seconds, with Alonso 16 seconds further back, followed by Kubica, Coulthard, Rosberg, Kovalainen, Fisichella, Sato and Barrichello in tenth.

On lap 58 Fisichella pitted from eighth place for a splash of fuel, Sato taking over the final points position.
