Jarno Trulli took provisional pole for the Spanish Grand Prix beating the local hero Fernando Alonso by 0.016s with Kimi Raikkonen right with the pair of them, just 0.008s behind Alonso and Ralf Schumacher's Toyota in the hunt as well with a best lap that was just 0.051s behind Ralf. The first four were thus covered by just 0.075s and only a tenth quicker than Nick Heidfeld (although he will drop back on the grid on Sunday having had an engine change). Mark Webber was sixth ahead of Michael Schumacher, curiously off the pace compared to his performance at Imola. The top 10 was completed by Giancarlo Fisichella in the second Renault, Rubens Barrichello (although he will be 10 places back on the grid because of an engine change) and David Coulthard. With no BAR-Hondas in the field the remaining eight cars lined up behind with Felipe Massa, Juan Pablo Montoya, Tonio Liuzzi, Jacques Villeneuve, Narain Karthikeyan, Tiago Monteiro, Christijan Albers and Patrick Friesacher.
