Fernando Alonso set the early pace at Marina Bay as Formula 1’s Singapore Grand Prix weekend opened with a competitive first practice session. The Aston Martin driver topped the times on soft tyres with a 1m31.116s, narrowly ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

The daylight outing on the evolving street surface produced variable grip, with dust and light debris catching several drivers. Alonso struck first on mediums with a 1m32.592s, before Lando Norris briefly took over with a 1m32.493s on hards. Carlos Sainz then lowered the mark to 1m31.812s for Williams on mediums, showing early confidence through the tight corners.

As the field switched to softs in the second half of the session, Leclerc established a benchmark of 1m31.266s. McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Norris attempted to respond but both reported handling issues, Piastri describing his MCL39 as understeery. Verstappen slotted in behind Leclerc with a 1m31.392s, but Alonso managed to go faster on his first push lap with the C5 compound, edging clear by 0.150s.

Alonso then marginally improved on a follow-up effort to secure the top spot, while Leclerc ended the session second and Verstappen third. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton was fourth with a 1m31.480s, just one thousandth of a second ahead of Piastri, who brushed the wall on his fastest attempt. Norris wound up sixth at 1m31.698s.

Rookie Isack Hadjar impressed for Racing Bulls, placing seventh on 1m31.755s, ahead of Sainz, who chose not to run soft tyres and remained on mediums. Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda was ninth, and Esteban Ocon rounded out the top 10 for Haas with a 1m32.128s.

Behind them, George Russell was 11th for Mercedes on mediums, narrowly behind Ocon. Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto gave Sauber steady mileage in 12th and 17th, while Pierre Gasly was 13th for Alpine. Andrea Kimi Antonelli placed 14th in the second Mercedes, with Liam Lawson 15th for Racing Bulls. Oliver Bearman was 16th in the Haas, while Lance Stroll could manage only 18th after a disrupted run plan.

Franco Colapinto, driving the Alpine, ended 19th, while Alex Albon’s session lasted just minutes as a rear brake fire halted his Williams in the garage.

With Alonso leading from Leclerc and Verstappen, the session hinted at another tight weekend battle under the Singapore lights.
