During the second practice session (FP2) for the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix 2024, Fernando Alonso in his Aston Martin was quickest with a lap time of 1m28.827, edging out Mercedes' George Russell and current world champion Max Verstappen.

This session, pivotal for nighttime race preparations, unfolded under the dazzling lights of Jeddah, albeit starting ten minutes behind schedule due to FIA's inspection for safety measures concerning the pitlane's drain covers.

The early minutes saw McLaren's Oscar Piastri setting the pace to post the initial fastest lap, despite Valtteri Bottas' early mishap with a spin at Turn 1. The drivers predominantly opted for medium or hard tires, contrasting Red Bull's strategy to utilize soft tires from the beginning, which soon led to an intense battle for the top positions on the leaderboard.

Alonso, on medium tires, delivered a strong lap time of 1m29.846s, temporarily disrupted by Verstappen's brief ascendancy. However, Alonso reclaimed the top spot with an even faster lap. The session intensified as drivers switched to soft tires for qualifying simulations, a critical phase where Alonso continued to outpace his rivals, further lowering his time to a 1m28.827s, securing the fastest lap of the session.

Verstappen and Russell jostled closely behind, with Verstappen initially falling short by 0.331s and Russell subsequently leapfrogging into second place, hinting at a tightly contested race ahead. The session not only highlighted the front-runners' prowess but also showcased strategic nuances, with teams and drivers adapting to the Jeddah circuit's unique challenges.

As the session progressed into its latter stages, focusing on long-run simulations, the drivers faced additional obstacles, including traffic and technical issues, notably Lewis Hamilton's early exit due to a power issue in his Mercedes. This phase of the session was crucial for teams to gather data on tire durability and car performance over longer stints, providing insights into race day strategies.

The end of the session saw Alonso, Russell, and Verstappen leading the pack, with their performances setting the tone for an enthralling qualifying session and race.
