Sprint Race Report - Piastri wins Sprint

Oscar Piastri in the McLaren-Mercedes won the 19 lap Qatar Sprint Race, winning over George Russell in the Mercedes, 4.951 seconds behind the winner. Lando Norris, in the second McLaren took third place, 6.279 seconds behind the winner.

It is Piastri’s third consecutive Sprint race victory at Qatar over the past three seasons. The win is Piastri’s first win since the Dutch Grand Prix in August.

Max Verstappen (9.054s) in the Red Bull-Honda finished fourth, followed by his team mate Yuki Tsunoda (19.327s) in fifth, Kimi Antonelli (21.391s) in the second Mercedes GP was sixth, Fernando Alonso (24.556s) in the Aston Martin-Mercedes was seventh, and Carlos Sainz (27.333s) in the Williams-Mercedes took the final point in eighth.

Isack Hadjar was ninth, followed by Albon, Bortoleto, Bearman, Leclerc, Lawson, Ocon, Hulkenberg, Hamilton, Gasly, Stroll and Colapinto in 20th.

At the appointed time under the lights the cars came around to the grid, the start lights went off and the race began with Piastri takes the lead with Russell, Norris, Verstappen, Tsunoda, Alonso and Antonelli in seventh.

On lap 3 Piastri leads Russell by 1.2 seconds.

Verstappen is challenging Norris for third place.

At lap 6 the order remains the same, Piastri, Russell, Norris, Verstappen, Tsunoda, Alonso, Antonelli, Sainz, Hadjar, and Albon in tenth, Leclerc 13th, Hamilton 18th.

At lap 10 of 19, Piastri leads Russell by1.8 seconds, followed by Norris (3.8s), Verstappen (6.1s), Tsunoda (8.1s), Alonso (10.3s), Antonelli (11.5s), Sainz (13.5s), Hadjar (15.6s) and Albon (16.7s) in tenth.

On lap 12 Leclerc is up to 13th.

On lap 13 Alonso dips a wheel at the final corner and Antonelli passes him for sixth.

Tsunoda is a given a 5-second penalty for track limits.

Piastri has reported to the team that he has been feeling a vibration in the car.

At tne checkered flag Piastri wins ahead of Russell and Norris.

After the finish the stewards established that Antonelli had his fifth track limit violation and was handed a 5-second time penalty - which equalized the final positions for both Tsunoda and Antonelli.
