Race Notes - Button wins Monaco GP in Brawn 1-2

Jenson Button cruised to a win in the Monaco Grand Prix today, leading his Brawn-Mercedes team mate Rubens Barrichello for a one-two finish, by 7.6 seconds. Kimi Raikkonen was third for Ferrari, 13.4 seconds behind the leader, followed by his team mate Felipe Massa in fourth, some 15.1 seconds behind.

The win is Button's fifth of sixth races in the season so far, and the third Brawn-Mercedes 1-2 finish.

Mark Webber (15.7s) in the Red Bull-Renault finished in fifth place, followed by Nico Rosberg (33.5s) in the Williams-Toyota in sixth place, Fernando Alonso (37.8s) in the Renault in seventh place and Sebastien Bourdais (63.1s) in the Toro Rosso-Ferrari took the final points paying position.

Before the start Lewis Hamilton took a penalty for replacing his gearbox after crashing in Q1 Qualifying, so will start 19th, While Timo Glock starts from the pitlane in order to make setup changes.

At the start polesitter Button gets off the line in the lead, while Barrichello made one position into second ahead of Raikkonen, Vettel, Massa, Rosberg, Kovalainen, Webber, Alonso and Nakajima in tenth place.

Hamilton pases Trulli for 18th place on the first lap, while the two Brawns pull out a lead with Railkkonen 2.5 seconds behind.

On lap 3 Kubica pits.

On lap 4 Glock cuts the chicane after the swimming pool.

On lap 6 Massa takes a look at passing Vettel out of the tunnel, but is on the outside, while a line of cars start to queue up behind the Red Bull driver.

On lap 7 Massa tries to pass Vettel again out of the tunnel brakes too late, and cuts the chicane. Massa then lets Vettel back past to not incur a penalty, but Rosberg takes advantage and follows Vettel through and passes Massa for fifth place. The top three runners lapping in the 1m17s, while Vettel and the cars behind are running in the 1m20s.

On lap 10 Rosberg, Massa and Kovalainen pass Vettel, who then pits - his soft rear tyres are shot. Hamilton pits as well.

On lap 11 Sebastien Buemi runs into the back of Nelson Piquet at Ste Devote pushing both of them off into the barriers - both are out.

At lap 14 Button leads his team mate Barrichello by 10.9 seconds, followed by Raikkonen (11.4s), Rosberg (21.1), Massa (22.9s), Kovalainen (27.2s), Webber (29.0s), Alonso (32.8s), Nakajima (35.4s) and Bourdais (38.3s) in tenth place - Hamilton runs 1 lap behind in 17th.

On lap 16 Raikkonen pits from third place, rejoining in seventh place.

On lap 17 Vettel catches the tyre barriers at Ste Devote and is out of the race. Barrichello pits from seconds place.

On lap 18 Button pits from the lead, handing the lead to Rosberg who is yet to pit.

On lap 9 Rosberg pits and rejoins in seventh, staying on the harder tyre.

On lap 20 Massa pits from second place, rejoining in six place, getting ahead of Rosberg.

On lap 22 Kovalainen makes his first stop from second place, rejoining just behind Rosberg. Webber pits this next lap from second place, rejoining behind Massa, and just ahead of Rosberg.

At lap 23 Button leads his team mate Barrichello by 16.6 seconds followed by Raikkonen (19.2s), Alonso (20.3s), yet to make a stop, Massa (22.8s), Webber (25.7s), Rosberg (26.9s), Kovalainen (28.4s), Nakajima (30.0s), and Bourdais (31.4s) in tenth place - Hamilton stuck in 16th place.

On lap 29 Alonso is the last of the front runners to make his pitstop from fourth place - rejoining in 11th place.

On lap 30 Kubica pits and retires.

At lap 34, Button leads Barrichello by 14.6 seconds, followed by Raikkonen (18.3s), Massa (21.5s), Webber (25.8s), Rosberg (33.2s), Kovalainen (36.1s), Nakajima (39.2s), Bourdais (45.9s) and Fisichella (47.2s) in tenth place - Hamilton in 15th.

On lap 36 Nakajima makes his first stop from eighth place, rejoining in 12th - Bourdais, Fisichella, Heidfeld, Trulli and Glock, seemingly on a one stop strategy and still yet to pit.

On lap 37 Button laps last year's Monaco winner Hamilton, mired in 15th place.

On lap 42 Raikkonen starts to close in on Barrichello in second place, but the Brazilian responds, maintaining a 2 seconds gap over the Finn.

On lap 43 Heidfeld makes his first stop.

At lap 45 Button leads Barrichello by 15.2 seconds followed by Raikkonen (17.8s), Massa (20.6s), Webber (24.5s), Rosberg (37.6s), Kovalainen (38.5s), Bourdais (53.7s), Fisichella (57.1s) and Alonso (58.3s) in tenth place - Hamilton in 15th.

On lap 51 Barrichello is the first of the leaders to make his second stop from second place, rejoining in 5th place. Bourdais makes his first stop - Fisichella and Glock yet to make a stop.

On lap 52 Button makes his second stop - handing the lead to Raikkonen and rejoining in second.

On lap 53 Kovalainen loses the rear of his car exiting the first chicane to the swimming pool, spins and then crashes into the wall and is out. Raikonen and Fisichella pit - Raikkonen rejoins 3 seconds behind Barrichello in fifth place.

On lap 56 Massa and Webber pit from second and third places, rejoining in fourth and sixth.

At lap 57 Button leads Barrichello by 13.2 seconds, followed by Raikkonen (16.3s), Massa (20.2s), Rosberg (21.6s), Webber (23.2s), Alonso (40.4s), Bourdais (63.7s), Fisichella (66.6s) and Nakajima (68.1s) in tenth place.

On lap 58 Glock makes his only pit stop.

On lap 63 Rosberg makes his final stop from fifth place, rejoining in seventh place.

On lap 67 Alonso pits from sixth place, taking on the soft tyres, rejoining in seventh.

At lap 68 Button continues to lead his team mate Barrcihello by 11.9 seconds, followed by Raikkonen (18.4s), Massa (19.6s), Webber (23.6s), Rosberg (41.1s), Alonso (49.0s), Bourdais (67.6s), Fisichella (68.7s) and Nakajima (69.9s) in tenth place - Hamilton in 14th.

On the final lap Nakajima noses into the barriers at Mirabeau and is out from 10th place.

After the flag Button parks his car in the normal Parc Ferme instead of driving around to the start finish line, as is customary in Monaco, and ends up jogging a victory lap down the start-finish straight to get to the podium.
