Kimi Raikkonen topped the timesheets in the first session of practice for the Monaco GP with a gap of two-tenths of a second ahead of Lewis Hamilton and his McLaren team-mate Heikki Kovalainen. Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari was fourth fastest with Nico Rosberg being the best of the rest in his Williams-Toyota, ahead of BMW Sauber driver Robert Kubica and Renault's Fernando Alonso.

Rubens Barrichello was eighth quickest ahead of the Red Bull of Mark Webber and Giancarlo Fisichella's Force India, making it seven different cars in the top 10.

Timo Glock of Toyota was 11th but his team-mate Jarno Trulli blotted his copybook by breaking his rear suspension against one of Monaco's ever-close walls. Nick Heidfeld stopped out on the track and there was technical trouble also for David Coulthard in his Red Bull. The new Toro Rosso STR3 made its first appearance and Sebastien Bourdais was 13th with Sebastien Vettel 19th.
