Race Notes - Alonso dominates Monaco GP

Fernando Alonso won the Monaco Grand Prix in his Renault, taking his fourth win of the season, and his 12th career win. Juan Pablo Montoya finished in second place in his McLaren-Mercedes, 14.5 seconds behind, followed by David Coulthard in the Red Bull in third some 52 seconds behind the leader.

Fourth place went to Rubens Barrichello in his Honda, Michael Schumacher in the Ferrari was fifth, Giancarlo Fisichella in the second Renault was sixth, Nick Heidfeld in the Sauber-BMW was seventh and Ralf Schumacher in the Toyota took the final points position.

At the start, Alonso led Webber from the pole, with Raikkonen, Montoya and Barrichello behind. Tiago Monteiro got together with his team mate, and was forced to pit for a new nose. Michael Schumacher having been penalised to the back of the grid, started from the put moving from 22nd to 18th on the first lap.

On lap two, Raikkonen passed Webber to take second place, and was in hard pursuit on Alonso - the first four pulling away from the pack.

At lap 10, Alonso led Raikkonen by 0.7 seconds, followed by Webber, and Montoya within 4 seconds of the leader. Twenty seconds behind the leader Barrichello was in 5th, followed by Rosberg, Coulthard, Fisichella, Trulli and Klien in 10th place - Michael Schumacher in 16th, right behind Button.

On lap 19, Christijan Albers was given a drive through penalty for his incident at the start with Monteiro.

On lap 21, Schumacher found a way past Button at the chicane, while Montoya was the first person on a two-stop strategy to make a pitstop, not losing a spot in the order.

On lap 22 Raikkonen pitted, followed by Rosberg on lap 23, and race leader Alonso on lap 24 and Webber on lap 25 - the order remaining the same as before the stops. On lap 27 Fisichella pitted, followed by Coulthard on lap 29.

At 35 laps, Alonso led Raikkonen, Webber and Montoya - the first four covered by less than 2 seconds, followed by Barrichello, Trulli, Klien, Heidfeld, Ralf Schumacher and Liuzzi in 10th place.

On lap 36 the one-stoppers started to pit when Michael Schumacher came in, followed by Massa, Ralf Schumacher on lap 39, Heidfeld on lap 40, Klien and Button on lap 41, Barrichello, Trulli and Villeneuve on lap 45.

On lap 47, Webber, running in third, slowed and stopped at the pit exit, his car catching on fire and bringing out the Safety car - most of the field taking the opportunity to make their final stops.

At lap 50 the order was Alonso leading Raikkonen, Montoya, Barrichello, Trulli, Klien, Coulthard, Michael Schumacher, Fisichella and Heidfeld in 10th.

On lap 51 Raikkonen pulls off - his car catching on fire as well.

On lap 52 the race restarted with Alonso leading Montoya, with a number of lapped cars in between them.

On lap 54 Nico Rosberg understeered into the barriers at the final corner, taking out the second Williams.

On lap 57, Klien retired to the pits, while Jacques Villeneuve is penalised for overtaking under the safety car period.

At lap 60, Alonso led Montoya by 15.4 seconds, with Barrichello in third, some 23 seconds further back, followed by Trulli, Coulthard, Michael Schumacher, Fisichella, Heidfeld, Ralf Schumacher and Mssa in 10th.

On lap 63 Barrichello takes a drive-through penalty dropping the Brazilian from third to fifth place.

On lap 74 Trulli's Toyota in third place comes to a stop at Casino Square, promoting Coulthard to the podium.
