Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima were first and second in the first practice session in Kuala Lumpur for the Williams-Toyota team, ahead of the two Brawn-Mercedes of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello.

Fifth and sixth places went to the Ferrari with Felipe Massa ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, although the Finn had to bale out of his car in the pitlane when what appeared to be overheating KERS batteries filled the car with smoke.

Lewis Hamilton was seventh fastest, but the second McLaren of Heikki Kovalainen had problems and was slowest of the session.

Behind Hamilton the team by team pattern continued with Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing ahead of the two Toyotas of Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli. Giancarlo Fisichella was 12th in his Force India-Mercedes ahead of Robert Kubica's BMW Sauber and Nelson Piquet's Renault, although the Brazilian ended his session in the sandtrap with some kind of failure in the right front suspension. Adrian Sutil was next ahead of Fernando Alonso, Sebastien Buemi, Nick Heidfeld, Sebastien Bourdais and Kovalainen.
