Qualifying Report - Antonelli leads Mercedes front row sweep
Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix with a 1m28.778s lap at Suzuka, leading a Mercedes front-row lockout ahead of George Russell, who set a 1m29.076s. The Italian’s advantage was built progressively through qualifying, while Max Verstappen’s session unraveled in Q2, leaving him out of the top 10.
Q1 followed an expected pattern at the front, with Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren comfortably advancing. Antonelli set a 1m30.035s to move through safely, with Russell close behind on 1m29.967s. Oscar Piastri recorded a 1m30.200s and Lando Norris a 1m30.401s, while Charles Leclerc’s 1m29.915s and Lewis Hamilton’s 1m30.309s ensured Ferrari progressed without concern. Behind them, the margins were tighter. Carlos Sainz escaped elimination with a 1m30.927s, but Alex Albon (1m31.088s) and Oliver Bearman (1m31.090s) were eliminated, along with Cadillac pair Sergio Perez (1m32.206s) and Valtteri Bottas (1m32.330s). Aston Martin struggled significantly, with Fernando Alonso (1m32.646s) and Lance Stroll (1m32.920s) at the back.
Q2 proved decisive, particularly for Verstappen. Piastri initially set the pace with a 1m29.451s, but Leclerc improved to a 1m29.303s before Antonelli went quickest on a 1m29.048s. Russell followed on 1m29.686s to secure progression. Norris (1m29.795s) and Hamilton (1m29.589s) also advanced comfortably. Further down, Pierre Gasly impressed with a 1m29.874s, while Gabriel Bortoleto (1m29.990s) and Arvid Lindblad (1m30.109s) held on to reach Q3. Verstappen, however, could only manage a 1m30.262s after a 1m30.519s in Q1 and was eliminated in 11th, reporting handling issues over team radio. Esteban Ocon (1m30.309s), Nico Hulkenberg (1m30.387s), Liam Lawson (1m30.495s) and Franco Colapinto (1m30.627s) also fell short.
In Q3, Antonelli delivered the defining lap of the session with a 1m28.778s on his first run, edging Russell’s 1m29.076s. Neither Mercedes improved on their second attempts. McLaren locked out the second row, with Piastri posting a 1m29.132s to stay ahead of Norris on 1m29.409s. Ferrari followed, Leclerc setting a 1m29.405s and Hamilton a 1m29.567s. Gasly took seventh with a 1m29.691s, ahead of Isack Hadjar (1m29.978s), Bortoleto (1m30.274s) and Lindblad (1m30.319s), completing the top 10.
