Race Notes - Hamilton wins Italian Grand Prix over Rosberg

Lewis Hamilton won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in his Mercedes GP, 3.1 seconds ahead of his team mate Nico Rosberg in second place. Felipe Massa finished 21.8 seconds further back to take third place in the Williams-Mercedes.

Starting on pole position, Hamilton had a slow start and fell back to fourth place and then worked his way back to the front.

Valtteri Bottas (15.7s) finished fourth in the other Williams-Mercedes. He was followed by Daniel Ricciardo (9.5s) in the Red Bull-Renault in fifth, his team mate Sebastian Vettel (9.6s) in sixth, Sergio Perez (2.5s), in the Force India-Mercedes in seventh, Jenson Button (0.5s) in the McLaren-Mercedes in eighth, Kimi Raikkonen (0.4s) in the Ferrari in ninth and Kevin Magnussen (2.6s) in the second McLaren in the final points paying position in tenth place.

Before the start, the top ten are all starting on medium compound tyres with a one-stop strategy - with low tyre degradation expected on both the medium and hard tyres.

Kvyat will start 21st after an engine change penalty.

Hulkenberg, Sutil, Gutierrez, Grosjean, Kvyat and Ericsson will all start on hard tyres.

At the start Hamilton gets a slow start off the line, Rosberg takes the lead into the first chicane, Magnussen up to second, followed by Mass, Hamilton, Vettel, Button, Perez, Alonso, Hulkenberg and Bottas down to tenth.

Alonso passes Perez on the outside of the second Lesmo corner.

On lap 2 Hamilton complains to the team that he had electronic problems getting off the line at the start.

On lap 3 Massa closes on Magnussen in second place. Rosberg leads by 2.8 seconds, and sets fast lap.

On lap 5 Massa passes Magnussen for second at the second chicane, Hamilton follows him through at the first Lesmo corner to take third.

On lap 6 Bottas passes Hulkenberg on the main straight for ninth. Massa sets fast lap. Yellow flags are out at the second chicane as Max Chilton has spun off into the gravel.

On lap 9 Hamilton sets a new fastest lap. Rosberg locks up into the braking zone at the first chicane and decides to zig-zag through the escape road, but continues in the lead - his lead down to 2 seconds.

On lap 10 Bottas passes Raikkonen for ninth. Hamilton passes Massa on the outside into the first chicane to take over second place. Gutierrez pits and switches to medium tyres.

Vettel closes on Magnussen in fourth.

On lap 14 Bottas passes Perez down the main straight for eighth place. Hamilton is edging closer to Rosberg - the lead down to 1.5 seconds.

On lap 15 Williams radios to Massa that he is dragging his foot on the brakes as well as the throttle.

On lap 16 Bottas passes Alonso on the main straight for seventh place.

On lap 18 Bottas continues to be fast in a straight-line, passing Button on the main straight for sixth place. Grosjean Lotus is showing damaged bodywork.

On lap 19 Vettel pits and switches to hard compound tyres. Perez and Hulkenberg both pit the next lap. Magnussen pits as well.

On lap 21 Raikkonen pits. Bottas passes Magnussen at the first chicane to take fourth place. Rosberg‘s lead is down to 1.2 seconds - he tells the team not to feed him the gaps to his team mate.

On lap 23 Button pits from fifth for hard tyres. Maldonado has an off at Lesmo, but continues.

On lap 24 Massa pits from third place and switches to hard tyes. He rejoins in fifth place. Mercedes tells Hamilton to push - telling him that it is ‘Hammer time‘Ï.

On lap 25 Rosberg makes a quick pitstop, switching to hard compound tyres. Bottas pits as well.

On lap 26 Hamilton pits and switches to hard tyres as well, and rejoins right behind his team mate.

Bottas passes Perez down the main straight for eighth place.

Mercedes tells Rosberg that he needs to watch his fuel consumption.

On lap 27 Ricciardo pits for hard tyres, rejoining in 12th. Hamilton sets fast lap.

On lap 29 Rosberg for a second time locks up his brakes at the first chicance and takes to the escape road - Hamilton takes over the lead.

Fernando, running tenth, pulls to the side of the track and is out of the race with a suspected gearbox problem.

On lap 31 Kvyat makes his first stop, up to fourth place. Bottas looks to pass Magnussen in fifth at the chicane but runs out of room and has to run over the kerbs.

On lap 32 Button attempts to pass Perez but can‘t get it done.

On lap 34 Ricciardo passes Raikkonen for ninth at the chicane.

On lap 37 Bottas passes Magnussen down the main straight to take over fifth place.

Magnussen is given a 5 second stop-go for forcing Bottas over the kerbs at the chicane earlier.

On lap 39 Bottas closes on Vettel. Hamilton leads Rosberg by 4.1 seconds. Button passes Perez at the chicane, but Perez comes back and repasses at the second chicane.

On lap 40 Bottas passes Vettel at the first chicane to take fourth. Ricciardo passes Button as well.

On lap 41 Ricciardo passes Perez at the second chicane for seventh place.

On lap 42 Button passes Perez, but once again Perez comes back past at the second chicane.

On lap 44 Riciardo passes Magnussen at the chicane for sixth place.

On lap 46 Ricciardo closes to within a second of his team mate Vettel. Kvyat passes Hulkenberg for 11th place.

On lap 47 Ricciardo tries to pass Vettel at the first chicane, but can‘t get it done - Ricciardo continues to push and gets past the world champion at the second chicane.

On lap 49 Vettel has Magnussen, Perez and Button closing on his Red Bull.

On lap 51 Gutierrez limps back to the pits with a punctured tyre.

On lap 52 Kvyat is having brake problems and goes for a ride through the escape road - but continues.

At the chequered flag Hamilton wins over his Mercedes team mate Rosberg, and Massa in third place.
