Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton led the way in the second practice session at Monza on Friday afternoon. The Spaniard was eight-tenths faster than the Englishman but Hamilton was three-tenths clear of Giancarlo Fisichella's Renault, which was a surprising fourth fastest ahead of Robert Kubica and Nico Rosberg. The odd thing was that Ferrari was nowhere with Felipe Massa 1.4secs off the best McLaren time and sixth in the session. Behind him were Nick Heidfeld and Kimi Raikkonen with the top 10 completed by Heikki Kovalainen and Alexander Wurz.

The two Toyotas were 11th and 12th with Jarno Trulli ahead of Ralf Schumacher with Jenson Button 13th. Mark Webber was next in his Red Bull, ahead of Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard in the second Red Bull.

Takuma Sato was 17th ahead of Sebastian Vettel and the new Spyker of Adrian Sutil, while Tonio Liuzzi continued to find his car handling oddly and was only 20th but nonetheless ahead of Sakon Yamamoto and Anthony Davidson, who stopped out on the track in the middle of the session.
