Ricardo Zonta gave Toyota the fastest time of the day at Monza on Friday with a best lap in the afternoon session of 1m20.531s, slower than the morning session when McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa recorded a lap of 1m20.201s. McLaren were still strong in the afternoon with Juan-Pablo Montoya, Kimi Raikkonen and de la Rosa in second, third and fourth places in the afternoon, ahead of the two Williams-BMWs of Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld. Seventh place was a fine showing from Red Bull's test driver Tonio Liuzzi, who was well ahead of his two team mates.

The top 10 was completed by Jarno Trulli (Toyota), Giancarlo Fisichella and Fernando Alonso.

There was trouble for Michael Schumacher as the Ferrari star spun and hit the tyre wall at the Parabolica.

Also in trouble was Jordan's test driver Nicolas Kiesa, who suffered an engine failure at the start of the session.
