Practice 3 Report - Piastri leads Norris by 0.032s in final practice
Oscar Piastri set the pace in the final practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix, edging out McLaren team-mate Lando Norris by just 0.032s as the Woking-based outfit maintained its control over the weekend.
Piastri’s fastest time of 1m14.916s was logged late in the session on a fresh set of soft tyres. The lap saw him improve by over nine-tenths from his earlier effort, and it proved enough to withstand Norris’ own late push, which came up just short at 1m14.948s.
The McLaren pair were well clear of the rest of the field. Charles Leclerc was best of the rest for Ferrari in third, posting a 1m15.315s, with team-mate Lewis Hamilton just behind on 1m15.684s. Both drivers set their fastest laps on the softs.
Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli delivered another strong showing, rounding out the top five with a 1m15.745s. He was followed by Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, who clocked 1m15.794s and 1m15.828s respectively.
George Russell was eighth in the second Mercedes, only 0.012s behind Stroll, after a lap of 1m15.840s that lost time through the middle and final sectors.
Sauber drivers Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg completed the top 10. Bortoleto posted a 1m15.978s, while Hulkenberg followed close behind at 1m16.025s, continuing the team’s improved form at the Hungaroring.
Just outside the top 10, Oliver Bearman was 11th, ahead of a subdued Max Verstappen, who ended up 12th on 1m16.202s.
As the session wore on, multiple drivers held the top spot in a short span — including Verstappen, Leclerc, and Russell — before Piastri took control with two fast laps, capped by the 1m14.916s that ultimately topped the session.
The final practice sets the stage for a competitive qualifying, with McLaren clearly the benchmark heading into Saturday afternoon.
